Ice Fishing Tips
Ice fishing is an enjoyable activity, but there are a number of things to consider before going ice fishing. Is it early in the season, or late? What species are you hoping to catch? Ice fishing tips are keys to review before you head out!
Finding the Fish
In the winter locating schools of fish can be an extremely troublesome ordeal. Start looking for tight groups of fishermen or tents in a general area. It is probable that some of them know where the fish hold. If you pass such an area, a few hours after sun up, the serious guys will already be there. This should give you a clue as to where to begin.
Cutting Holes
After finding a general area to fish, continue onto the ice with carefulness. You should be as quiet as you can when approaching your targeted spot or passing by other fishermen who are already set up and catching fish. The best theory for fishing is to cut one hole at a time and set a time frame for waiting out the fish. Cutting a bunch of holes in an area drives schools away!
Line Twist
Most anglers only move their jig in an up and down jigging motion. Fish become familiarized to this appearance and stop reacting to it. For a change of rapidity, try holding the line between your index finger and thumb and roll or twist the line between your fingers. Another technique is to move the jig around the border of the hole without imparting any up and down motion on the jig.
Equipment
For an angler fishing over the weekend standard ice fishing rod is good enough. The rod is rarely more than a fiberglass rod about two feet long with two line guides and a small take up reel. The line can be from 2 to 6 pound test monofilament. Another handy equipment is bobbers as well as a variety of lures, hooks, sinkers, swivels and other basic fishing tackle.
Clothing and Safety
With the weather changeable at times, clothing is a chief factor to your day on the hard water. Safety is always something to keep in mind, particularly early and late in the season. Make sure the ice is at least 4 inches thick before you walk on it. Check the ice reports in your region before you head out, and play it smart!
